What’s a Zine?

These in-person or virtual workshops explore the history and use of zines as both an art form and a tool for activism. Marginalized groups in our society have used zines to share their stories, perspectives, and manifestos and to connect with each other, a tradition that continues to this day! Learning about the long history of zines can be inspirational to new zine-makers and longtime enthusiasts alike.

This workshop can be tailored to a variety of topic and interest areas. Previously, I have presented on the history of zines as a form of art, a tool for activism, a Queer and BIPOC discipline, and more. These workshops typically include a short presentation on the history of zines, share relevant examples by other zine-makers, and demonstrate some basic folds. Then, participants have the chance to make their own zines inspired by a list of curated prompts using provided materials. The workshop concludes with a short share-out for any folks that feel comfortable, so we can learn from each other’s perspectives as well.
